Child Adoption and Legal Guardianship in Pakistan

Pakistani law handles adoption through guardianship, not through a separate adoption statute. ICTV explains your options and prepares the court application.

About Child Adoption (Guardianship)

Pakistan has no general adoption law that makes an adopted child the legal equal of a biological child. Families who take in a child do so by applying to the guardian court under the Guardians and Wards Act, 1890, which gives them legal authority over the care and affairs of the child.

The court looks at the welfare of the child and at the suitability of the applicant. An adopted child does not automatically gain a share in inheritance, so families often plan separately, within what the law allows, to provide for the child. We explain the process, the evidence the court looks for and the limits, so that you can decide with full information.
